What would change if I did nothing for five years?
The decision rarely feels urgent when life is going well. Yet the people who make the smoothest transitions are often those who started exploring their options before they needed to.
The most successful moves are rarely driven by a crisis. Instead, they are the result of thoughtful planning while there is still plenty of time, choice and flexibility. In that sense, considering future living arrangements is no different from reviewing a will, updating financial plans or making other long-term decisions before they become pressing.
The next five years are unlikely to be wasted. But they may be the years in which you have the greatest freedom to make decisions on your own terms. Waiting does not usually create a problem today. What it can do is reduce the range of options available later where you move, when you move and how much control you have over the process.
This is not an argument for making a change now. It is simply a reminder that doing nothing is also a choice, and one with consequences of its own.
Taking the time to understand your options today can make any future decision feel more considered, and less rushed.
I wish I'd done this 10 years ago.
